Job Description
We are seeking a highly dedicated and experienced Safety Officer to join our team in Meru, Meru County. This critical role focuses on worksite compliance and proactive monitoring to ensure that all KPLC operations, projects, and activities adhere strictly to national and international occupational health and safety (OH&S) regulations, as well as internal company policies and procedures. The Safety Officer will be instrumental in cultivating a robust safety culture across our various worksites, including power line maintenance, new installations, substation operations, and general facility management. You will be responsible for identifying potential hazards, conducting thorough risk assessments, and implementing effective control measures to mitigate risks. This position requires a proactive individual with a keen eye for detail, strong communication skills, and an unwavering commitment to achieving a zero-harm environment. Your expertise will directly contribute to preventing incidents, protecting our workforce, and enhancing KPLC’s reputation as a responsible and safety-conscious utility provider. The role demands continuous vigilance, practical problem-solving, and the ability to educate and influence personnel at all levels regarding best safety practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular and thorough safety inspections and audits of all KPLC worksites, equipment, and procedures within the Meru region.
- Monitor compliance with all relevant Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation, regulations, standards, and KPLC internal safety policies.
- Identify potential hazards, assess risks, and recommend appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determine root causes, and develop effective mitigation strategies to prevent recurrence.
- Develop, implement, and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for employees and contractors on various safety topics, including electrical safety, working at heights, confined spaces, and emergency procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, training sessions, and compliance documentation.
- Collaborate with project managers, supervisors, and other departmental heads to integrate safety considerations into all planning and operational activities.
- Ensure the availability and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) across all worksites.
- Advise management on safety performance, emerging risks, and opportunities for continuous improvement in safety management systems.
- Participate in emergency response planning and drills, ensuring preparedness for various workplace emergencies.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness campaigns, safety meetings, and positive reinforcement.
- Stay updated on industry best practices and changes in safety legislation to ensure ongoing compliance.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Safety Officer or in a similar OH&S role, preferably within the utilities, construction, or heavy industry sector.
- In-depth knowledge of Kenyan Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant safety regulations and standards.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deliver engaging training sessions and clear reports.
- Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis techniques.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Computer literacy, including proficiency with MS Office Suite.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, IOSH).
- Experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS) implementation and auditing.
- Knowledge of electrical safety standards and practices.
