Job Description

Are you a dedicated and physically capable individual with a strong commitment to community cleanliness? The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) in Portmore is seeking motivated and reliable Sanitation Workers to join our City Cleaning team. This vital role involves maintaining the aesthetic appeal and hygienic standards of public spaces within Portmore, Saint Catherine. As a Sanitation Worker, you will be on the front lines, ensuring our streets, parks, and communal areas are free from litter and debris. Your work will directly contribute to the health, safety, and pride of the Portmore community, making a tangible difference in the daily lives of thousands. This is a hands-on position requiring physical stamina, attention to detail, and a responsible approach to environmental stewardship. Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and dispose of litter, refuse, and general debris from streets, sidewalks, parks, beaches, and other public areas.
  • Operate and maintain hand tools such as brooms, rakes, shovels, and litter grabbers effectively and safely.
  • Manually load refuse into collection vehicles, ensuring proper handling and securing of waste.
  • Perform general sweeping and cleaning of public roads, markets, bus stops, and other high-traffic zones.
  • Assist with the cleaning and clearing of drains and gullies to prevent blockages and maintain proper water flow.
  • Participate in special clean-up campaigns and community initiatives as required.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Report any unusual or hazardous waste materials encountered to supervisors immediately.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure efficient and thorough completion of daily cleaning routes.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor while interacting with the public.

Required Skills

  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work effectively outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, rain, etc.).
  • Strong work ethic and a responsible approach to assigned duties.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Basic understanding of safety procedures and environmental hygiene.
  • Punctuality and reliability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (CXC/CSEC passes are a plus).
  • Previous experience in sanitation, landscaping, general labour, or similar outdoor manual work.
  • A valid General Driver's License (Class B or C) would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of local Portmore geography and street layouts.
