Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced School Cook to manage and prepare daily nutritious meals for students within a vibrant educational setting in Uasin Gishu County. This pivotal role involves ensuring that all meals are prepared to the highest standards of hygiene, taste, and nutritional value, catering to the dietary needs and preferences of a diverse student population. Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and cook daily breakfast, lunch, and snack meals for students, adhering to approved menus and dietary guidelines.
  • Ensure all food preparation and storage practices comply with strict health, hygiene, and food safety regulations (HACCP principles).
  • Manage kitchen inventory, including ordering supplies, receiving deliveries, and minimising food waste.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe kitchen environment, performing daily cleaning tasks for equipment, utensils, and work surfaces.
  • Monitor food quality and presentation, ensuring meals are appealing and well-balanced.
  • Accommodate special dietary needs and allergies as communicated by the school administration.
  • Collaborate with school staff to plan meals for special events or school trips.
  • Operate and maintain all kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Adhere to budget constraints for food and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate records of food production, waste, and inventory.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a cook, preferably in a school, institutional, or large-scale catering setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards (e.g., HACCP, public health regulations).
  • Ability to prepare a variety of nutritious meals from scratch.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods and lift heavy items.
  • Basic numeracy for inventory and portion control.
  • Valid food handler's permit/certificate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or Diploma in Culinary Arts, Hospitality, or a related field.
  • Experience with menu planning and nutritional analysis for children.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Familiarity with local Kenyan cuisine and international dishes.
