Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Shipping Officer to join our logistics team in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo. In this critical full-time role, you will be instrumental in managing the efficient flow of goods, both incoming and outgoing, within our extensive supply chain network. While Lebowakgomo is an inland location, this role requires a comprehensive understanding of ‘port operations’ in the context of coordinating freight movements to and from South Africa’s major seaports and international borders via road and rail. You will be responsible for ensuring seamless shipping processes, meticulous documentation, and adherence to all national and international trade regulations. The Shipping Officer will act as a key liaison between various stakeholders including freight forwarders, carriers, customs officials, and our valued clients. Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and manage the end-to-end shipping and receiving processes for various types of cargo, including local and international movements.
- Prepare, review, and process all necessary shipping documentation, such as bills of lading, customs declarations, commercial invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin.
- Liaise effectively with freight forwarders, shipping lines, road carriers, Transnet Freight Rail, port authorities, and customs officials to ensure smooth operations.
- Track and trace shipments diligently, providing regular updates on status and estimated times of arrival/departure to internal teams and external clients.
- Ensure strict compliance with all relevant national and international shipping regulations, customs laws, and company policies.
- Identify and resolve any shipping discrepancies, delays, or issues promptly and efficiently, escalating complex problems when necessary.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all shipping activities, transactions, and correspondence in the company's logistics management system.
- Work collaboratively with procurement, warehousing, and sales departments to optimize logistics processes, reduce costs, and improve service delivery.
- Conduct regular audits of shipping documentation and procedures to identify areas for improvement and ensure best practices.
- Assist in the preparation of reports related to shipping volumes, costs, and performance metrics.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in shipping and logistics management software (e.g., ERP systems, freight management platforms).
- In-depth knowledge of import/export regulations, customs procedures, and international trade terms (Incoterms).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly.
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Valid South African driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, International Trade, or a related field.
- Specific knowledge of South African transport legislation and customs requirements.
- Experience with Transnet's internal systems or similar large-scale public enterprise logistics platforms.
- Dangerous Goods (DG) certification or experience with hazardous materials handling and documentation.
