Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct one-on-one and small group support to students with special educational needs, both within the general education classroom and in specialized settings.
- Assist in the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans, adapting materials and activities as directed by the classroom teacher or special education teacher.
- Support students with academic tasks, organization, communication, and social skills development.
- Help manage student behavior effectively, applying positive reinforcement strategies and de-escalation techniques as needed.
- Facilitate inclusive practices, ensuring students with special needs actively participate in school activities and feel a sense of belonging.
- Monitor and document student progress, collecting data on goals and sharing observations with the teaching team.
- Assist students with personal care needs (e.g., toileting, feeding, mobility) if required, while maintaining dignity and privacy.
- Collaborate closely with teachers, therapists, and other school staff to create a cohesive and supportive learning environment.
- Supervise students during non-instructional times, including lunch, recess, and transitions.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 1 year) working with children or young adults with special educational needs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and parents.
- Exceptional patience, empathy, and a positive, supportive demeanor.
- Ability to implement behavior management strategies effectively and maintain a safe learning environment.
- Capability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic understanding of special education principles and practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or higher in education, child development, psychology, or a related field.
- Certification as a Paraprofessional or Teacher Assistant in Connecticut.
- Experience with specific therapeutic approaches (e.g., ABA, PECS, Social Stories).
- Knowledge of various disabilities and learning challenges.
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish, Portuguese) is a plus.
