Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling to students concerning academic, social, emotional, and behavioral issues.
- Assist students in developing academic plans, selecting appropriate courses, and exploring post-secondary options (university, career, apprenticeships).
- Facilitate workshops and presentations on topics such as study skills, career exploration, mental health awareness, and conflict resolution.
- Collaborate effectively with teachers, parents/guardians, and administrators to support student success and well-being.
- Intervene in crisis situations, providing immediate support and appropriate referrals to internal and external resources.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student records, documenting counseling sessions and progress.
- Advocate for students' needs and ensure equitable access to educational opportunities and support services.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives, committees, and continuous professional development activities.
- Help students develop self-advocacy skills, resilience strategies, and a positive self-image.
- Interpret standardized test results and provide guidance on their implications for academic and career planning.
Required Skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) with students, staff, and parents.
- Strong empathetic listening and rapport-building abilities with diverse student populations.
- Proficiency in crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, and conflict resolution.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities and caseloads.
- Solid understanding of child and adolescent development, learning theories, and behavior management strategies.
- Familiarity with ethical guidelines and best practices in school counseling and safeguarding.
- Proficiency in using student information systems and standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in School Counseling, Educational Psychology, or a closely related field.
- State certification or licensure as a School Counselor in the UK (e.g., relevant PGCE or equivalent counseling qualification).
- Previous experience (2+ years) in a school counseling or student advisory role, preferably within a UK educational setting.
- Experience with specific counseling techniques (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy).
- Knowledge of local educational resources and community support services in Bristol and the surrounding areas.
