Career.zycto is on the lookout for a highly motivated and detail-oriented Studio Lighting Assistant to join our thriving creative team in Current River, Thunder Bay. This is an immediate hire opportunity for someone passionate about photography, videography, and the art of illumination. As a Studio Lighting Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting our lead photographers and videographers in creating stunning visual content across various projects, including commercial campaigns, portrait sessions, product photography, and more.

Your primary responsibility will be to assist in the setup, adjustment, and breakdown of lighting equipment, ensuring optimal lighting conditions for every shoot. This involves understanding different lighting techniques, operating various types of strobes, continuous lights, modifiers, and grip gear, and maintaining a safe and efficient working environment. You’ll be instrumental in translating creative concepts into technically sound lighting plans, learning on the job, and contributing your ideas to enhance our visual output.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist lead photographers/videographers in the setup, operation, and breakdown of all studio lighting and grip equipment.
  • Place and adjust lights, reflectors, diffusers, and other modifiers according to creative direction and technical specifications.
  • Ensure all lighting equipment is functioning correctly, troubleshoot minor issues, and report any significant faults.
  • Manage and organize lighting inventory, keeping the studio tidy and equipment well-maintained.
  • Assist with power distribution and cable management to maintain a safe and hazard-free workspace.
  • Monitor light levels and colour temperatures during shoots, making adjustments as directed.
  • Provide general on-set support, including moving props, setting up backdrops, and assisting with talent as needed.
  • Actively participate in pre-production planning meetings to understand lighting requirements for upcoming projects.
  • Adhere to all studio safety protocols and operational guidelines.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment.

Required Skills

  • Basic knowledge of photography/videography principles, especially concerning light.
  • Familiarity with various studio lighting equipment (strobes, continuous lights, modifiers).
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and a keen eye for visual aesthetics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, and set up heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs).
  • Proactive problem-solving skills and a can-do attitude.
  • Reliable transportation to the studio location.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ year of experience in a studio or on-set environment, ideally in a lighting or grip role.
  • Post-secondary education in photography, film production, or a related creative field.
  • Experience with different lighting brands (e.g., Profoto, Godox, Aputure).
  • Basic understanding of colour theory and its application in lighting.
  • Portfolio demonstrating an interest or involvement in visual production.
