Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and organize the operating room with all necessary sterile equipment, instruments, and supplies prior to surgical procedures.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team (surgeon, anesthesiologist, circulating nurse) by passing instruments and supplies efficiently and accurately.
- Maintain a sterile field throughout surgical procedures, adhering strictly to aseptic techniques and infection control policies.
- Assist in draping the patient and the surgical site, ensuring proper positioning and access.
- Perform accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulating nurse to ensure patient safety and prevent retained surgical items.
- Prepare and handle surgical specimens according to established procedures, ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
- Assist with the application of dressings and prepare patients for transport to the recovery room post-procedure.
- Collaborate effectively with all members of the surgical team to ensure optimal patient care and a smooth workflow.
- Participate in post-operative cleaning, disinfection, and restocking of the operating room.
- Adhere to all local, state, federal, and organizational safety and infection control policies and regulations.
Required Skills
- Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Current certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or eligibility for certification.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist in an acute care setting.
- Proficiency in maintaining sterile fields and aseptic techniques.
- Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation, equipment, and supplies across various specialties.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment with critical thinking skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology or a related field.
- Experience across multiple surgical specialties (e.g., general, orthopedics, neurology, vascular).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
