Job Description

This role offers an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to contribute to vital research projects as a Survey Enumerator. Based in Athi River, Nairobi, you will be the frontline representative, responsible for collecting high-quality data directly from respondents in various settings, including households, markets, and communities. Your work will involve utilizing digital data collection tools (e.g., ODK, SurveyCTO) on tablets or smartphones, ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality of all gathered information. This is more than just data collection; it’s about understanding diverse perspectives, respecting cultural nuances, and building rapport with community members to facilitate open and honest responses. We are looking for someone who is not only detail-oriented and tech-savvy but also possesses excellent interpersonal skills and a strong commitment to ethical research practices. As a Survey Enumerator, you will play a crucial role in shaping evidence-based decision-making. You will receive comprehensive training on survey instruments, data collection methodologies, and ethical guidelines before deployment, ensuring you are well-prepared for the field challenges. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct face-to-face interviews with selected respondents using structured questionnaires.
  • Accurately record responses using digital data collection tools (tablets/smartphones).
  • Ensure strict adherence to survey protocols, ethical guidelines, and data quality standards.
  • Verify collected data for accuracy, completeness, and consistency in the field.
  • Build and maintain rapport with respondents and community members.
  • Attend all training sessions, team meetings, and daily debriefings.
  • Report daily progress, challenges, and any incidents encountered in the field to the team leader.
  • Safeguard all assigned equipment (tablet, power bank, etc.) and survey materials.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all respondent information and survey data.
  • Navigate assigned geographical areas efficiently and safely.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili (both written and spoken).
  • Ability to use Android-based tablets/smartphones for data collection.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Physical fitness to undertake extensive field travel and walking.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in household surveys, baseline studies, or data collection.
  • Familiarity with digital data collection platforms (e.g., ODK, SurveyCTO, KoboToolbox).
  • Knowledge of local dialects spoken in Athi River and surrounding areas.
  • A post-secondary certificate or diploma in a relevant field (e.g., Social Sciences, Community Development).
  • Experience working in diverse community settings.
