Job Description

Tana River Technical and Vocational College is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant to bolster our school support team. This vital role involves working closely with our experienced instructors to create an engaging and effective learning environment across various departments, including engineering, business, and ICT. You will be instrumental in supporting classroom activities, assisting students with practical sessions in workshops and labs, preparing instructional materials, and ensuring a conducive atmosphere for skill development and academic success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist instructors in preparing and delivering engaging lessons and practical training sessions across various technical and vocational subjects.
  • Provide individualized and group support to students, helping them understand complex concepts and complete assignments and projects.
  • Prepare and organize teaching aids, specialized equipment, tools, and classroom materials before and after classes and practical sessions.
  • Monitor student progress, provide constructive feedback, and identify areas for improvement under the guidance of lead instructors.
  • Help maintain classroom and workshop discipline, ensuring a safe, organized, and conducive learning environment for all students.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as taking attendance, collating student records, and basic grading of assignments.
  • Support students with special learning needs, adapting materials and methods as required to ensure inclusive education.
  • Participate actively in departmental meetings and contribute to discussions regarding curriculum enhancement and student support strategies.

Required Skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, for effective interaction with students and staff.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for teaching, mentorship, and student development.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Foundational understanding of pedagogical principles and effective classroom management techniques.
  • Basic knowledge or willingness to learn about technical and vocational subjects relevant to the college's offerings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or Certificate in Education, TVET, or a related technical field from a recognized institution.
  • Prior experience (at least 6 months) working as a teaching assistant or in an educational support role.
  • Familiarity with vocational training methodologies and practical workshop/lab equipment.
  • Knowledge of local languages and cultural contexts within Tana River County to better connect with students.
  • First Aid certification or willingness to undertake training.
