Job Description

Career.zycto is actively seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tool and Die Maker to join our growing team in Southwest Detroit. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, construct, repair, and maintain complex tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and gauges to exacting specifications.
  • Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and CAD models to understand product requirements and tooling needs.
  • Operate a wide range of machine shop equipment, including lathes, mills, grinders (surface, cylindrical, jig), EDMs, and CNC machinery.
  • Perform precise measurements using a variety of inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, and CMMs.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot tooling problems, implementing corrective actions to restore functionality and improve performance.
  • Select and work with various materials, including tool steels, carbides, and other alloys, ensuring proper heat treatment and finishing.
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality control teams to refine designs, improve processes, and reduce downtime.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on tooling and equipment to maximize lifespan and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, adhering to all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Document all work performed, including repairs, modifications, and new tool builds, for record-keeping and future reference.

Required Skills

  • Journeyman Tool and Die Maker certification or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in tool and die making within a manufacturing setting
  • Proficiency in operating manual and CNC machining equipment (mills, lathes, grinders, EDM)
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and GD&T
  • Expertise in precision measuring techniques and the use of various inspection tools
  • Thorough understanding of metal properties, heat treatment processes, and material selection
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Tool and Die Technology or a related field
  • Experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mastercam)
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Experience with progressive dies and complex stamping operations
  • Experience in the automotive or heavy manufacturing industries
