Career.zycto is actively seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tool and Die Maker to join our growing team in Southwest Detroit. Key Responsibilities
- Design, construct, repair, and maintain complex tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and gauges to exacting specifications.
- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and CAD models to understand product requirements and tooling needs.
- Operate a wide range of machine shop equipment, including lathes, mills, grinders (surface, cylindrical, jig), EDMs, and CNC machinery.
- Perform precise measurements using a variety of inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, and CMMs.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot tooling problems, implementing corrective actions to restore functionality and improve performance.
- Select and work with various materials, including tool steels, carbides, and other alloys, ensuring proper heat treatment and finishing.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality control teams to refine designs, improve processes, and reduce downtime.
- Conduct preventative maintenance on tooling and equipment to maximize lifespan and operational efficiency.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, adhering to all company safety policies and procedures.
- Document all work performed, including repairs, modifications, and new tool builds, for record-keeping and future reference.
Required Skills
- Journeyman Tool and Die Maker certification or equivalent practical experience
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in tool and die making within a manufacturing setting
- Proficiency in operating manual and CNC machining equipment (mills, lathes, grinders, EDM)
- Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and GD&T
- Expertise in precision measuring techniques and the use of various inspection tools
- Thorough understanding of metal properties, heat treatment processes, and material selection
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Tool and Die Technology or a related field
- Experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mastercam)
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
- Experience with progressive dies and complex stamping operations
- Experience in the automotive or heavy manufacturing industries
