Job Description
Are you a passionate storyteller with an intimate knowledge of Marsabit’s hidden gems and majestic wildlife? Mount Marsabit Lodge is seeking an exceptional Local Safari Tour Guide to join our dedicated team. This is a unique opportunity for an individual with a deep love for the natural world and a knack for creating memorable experiences. As a Tour Guide, you will be the face of Mount Marsabit Lodge, leading guests through thrilling safari adventures in Marsabit National Park and its surrounding areas. You will be responsible for interpreting the rich biodiversity, sharing insights into local cultures, and ensuring the safety and comfort of our guests. We are looking for someone who can not only navigate challenging terrains but also weave captivating narratives about the elephants, buffaloes, and diverse birdlife that call Marsabit home. Key Responsibilities
- Lead engaging and informative safari game drives and guided walks within Marsabit National Park and designated conservancies.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all guests at all times, strictly adhering to lodge policies and park regulations.
- Provide expert interpretation of wildlife, flora, geology, and local cultural heritage in an entertaining and educational manner.
- Operate and maintain safari vehicles, conducting daily pre-trip inspections and ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
- Assist guests with luggage handling, lodge check-ins, and other logistical needs to ensure a seamless experience.
- Communicate effectively with lodge management and fellow team members regarding guest needs, trip schedules, and any incidents.
- Foster a positive and welcoming atmosphere, building rapport with guests from diverse backgrounds.
- Handle minor first aid situations and be prepared for emergencies, following established protocols.
- Promote responsible tourism practices and actively participate in conservation awareness efforts.
- Prepare comprehensive daily reports on sightings, guest feedback, and vehicle status.
Required Skills
- Valid KPSGA (Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association) Bronze Level certification or higher.
- Minimum 3 years of proven experience as a safari guide, with significant experience in northern Kenya, preferably Marsabit.
- Excellent knowledge of local wildlife, birdlife, flora, and ecological systems.
- Valid driving license with a clean driving record for off-road/safari vehicles (Class BCE).
- Proficiency in English and Swahili (both written and spoken).
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
- KPSGA Silver Level certification.
- Proficiency in additional international languages (e.g., German, French, Italian, Spanish).
- Knowledge of local indigenous languages specific to the Marsabit region (e.g., Borana, Rendille, Gabbra).
- Certification in advanced defensive driving.
- Proven track record of positive guest feedback and repeat client bookings.
- Experience in wildlife photography and videography guidance.
