Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and innovative Town Planner specializing in Urban Development to join a dynamic team focused on shaping the future landscape around Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and its wider Nairobi environs. This pivotal role involves contributing to sustainable urban growth, master planning, and policy formulation that supports strategic infrastructure development and community well-being. As a Town Planner, you will be instrumental in translating complex development goals into actionable plans, ensuring compliance with local and national planning regulations, and fostering environments that are both economically vibrant and ecologically sound. You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, government agencies, local communities, and private developers to guide projects from conceptualization through to implementation. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of urban design principles, environmental planning, socioeconomic factors influencing development, and effective stakeholder engagement strategies. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to the preparation of urban development plans, master plans, and detailed area plans for the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport precinct and surrounding areas.
- Conduct site appraisals, feasibility studies, and impact assessments for proposed development projects, including environmental, social, and economic analyses.
- Advise on planning policy, zoning regulations, and development control standards in line with national and county government frameworks.
- Prepare comprehensive reports, presentations, and technical drawings to communicate planning proposals to stakeholders and secure necessary approvals.
- Facilitate stakeholder engagement processes, including workshops, public meetings, and consultations with community groups, government bodies, and private sector partners.
- Monitor and evaluate the implementation of urban development plans, ensuring adherence to design guidelines, sustainability principles, and regulatory requirements.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively, working independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Stay abreast of best practices in urban planning, smart city initiatives, and sustainable development, applying innovative solutions to local challenges.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in urban planning, town planning, or urban design within a public or private sector setting.
- Strong understanding of Kenyan planning laws, policies, and development control regulations.
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and urban planning design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, with experience in technical report writing and public presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and meet deadlines.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Urban Planning, Regional Planning, Urban Design, or a related field.
- Registered member of a professional planning body in Kenya (e.g., KIP – Kenya Institute of Planners).
- Experience with large-scale infrastructure projects, particularly in an airport or transportation hub context.
- Knowledge of environmental impact assessment (EIA) processes and sustainability certifications.
- Familiarity with public-private partnerships (PPPs) in urban development.
