Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate trains in accordance with all company policies, railway operating rules (CROR), and federal regulations.
- Monitor track conditions, signals, and switches, responding appropriately to maintain operational safety.
- Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of locomotives and railcars, ensuring all equipment is in proper working order.
- Communicate effectively and precisely with train dispatchers, other crew members, and yard personnel using two-way radio systems.
- Adhere strictly to schedules and instructions, ensuring the timely arrival and departure of trains.
- Troubleshoot and resolve minor mechanical or operational issues that may arise during transit.
- Maintain accurate and detailed logs and reports related to train operations, incidents, and equipment status.
- Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies, unusual operating conditions, or unexpected events.
- Participate in ongoing training and safety briefings to enhance skills and knowledge of best practices.
Required Skills
- Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to successfully pass railway operating exams and required medical assessments.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a proactive commitment to safety.
- Strong oral and written communication skills in English (French is an asset).
- Physical ability to perform duties including climbing, lifting, walking, and working in various weather conditions and confined spaces.
- Mechanical aptitude and basic troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a locomotive engineer or in a related rail transportation role.
- Knowledge of Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR).
- Post-secondary education or certification in a related field (e.g., industrial mechanics, logistics, transportation).
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Familiarity with Granby and Quebec railway networks.
