This pivotal role involves optimizing logistical operations through strategic route design and efficient vehicle dispatch. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement efficient transport routes, considering vehicle capacity, delivery windows, traffic conditions, and cost-effectiveness.
- Plan and execute daily vehicle dispatch schedules, assigning drivers and vehicles to ensure timely collection and delivery.
- Monitor real-time transport operations, making necessary adjustments to routes and schedules to address unforeseen delays or issues.
- Liaise effectively with drivers, customers, and warehouse teams to ensure smooth communication and resolution of transport-related queries.
- Ensure full compliance with all relevant transport regulations, including driver hours, vehicle maintenance, and safety standards.
- Utilise transport management systems (TMS) and mapping software to optimise planning and tracking processes.
- Analyse transport data to identify areas for improvement in efficiency, cost reduction, and service quality.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records of routes, dispatches, deliveries, and any incidents or non-conformances.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the logistics department.
- Manage customer expectations by providing accurate and timely updates on delivery statuses.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Transport Planner or similar logistics role (minimum 2 years).
- Strong understanding of UK transport regulations and compliance (e.g., WTD, tachographs).
- Proficiency in using Transport Management Systems (TMS) and route planning software.
- Excellent geographical knowledge of the UK road network.
- Highly analytical with strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
- Experience with specific industry-leading TMS platforms.
- Holder of a National or International CPC qualification (Certificate of Professional Competence).
- Familiarity with lean logistics principles.
- Previous experience working within a fast-paced distribution or haulage environment.
