Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) for both long-distance national routes and local multi-drop deliveries within designated timeframes.
  • Perform daily vehicle safety checks, including pre-departure inspections (PODs), and report any defects promptly.
  • Adhere strictly to all road transport legislation, including driver hours regulations, tachograph rules, and working time directive (WTD).
  • Ensure the secure loading, unloading, and safe transportation of goods, preventing damage during transit.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork accurately and efficiently, including delivery notes, manifests, and vehicle defect reports.
  • Maintain professional communication with dispatch, warehouse staff, and customers at delivery and collection points.
  • Represent the company positively, ensuring excellent customer service and resolving minor issues professionally.
  • Plan routes efficiently, considering traffic and delivery schedules to meet tight deadlines.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy vehicle, performing basic maintenance checks as required.
  • Be flexible with working hours, including potential overnight stays for long-distance assignments when necessary.

Required Skills

  • Valid HGV Class 1 (CE) or Class 2 (C) Licence (depending on vehicle assigned)
  • Full Driver CPC qualification
  • Digital Tachograph Card
  • Minimum of 2 years' proven experience in HGV driving (both long-distance and local)
  • Excellent knowledge of UK road networks and traffic regulations
  • Impeccable driving record with no more than 6 points on licence
  • Strong understanding of WTD and driver hour regulations
  • Ability to complete paperwork accurately
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Physical fitness to perform loading/unloading duties if required

Preferred Qualifications

  • ADR Licence for hazardous goods (if applicable)
  • Forklift Truck (FLT) licence (reach/counterbalance)
  • Experience with various types of trailers (e.g., curtain-siders, box trailers)
  • Basic mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot minor vehicle issues
  • Previous experience with telematics systems and route optimisation software
