Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) for both long-distance inter-city routes and local deliveries within Caerphilly and Cardiff.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, ensuring all safety components are in working order and reporting any defects promptly.
- Load and unload goods, ensuring proper securement of cargo to prevent damage during transit, adhering to weight distribution guidelines.
- Adhere strictly to all traffic laws, company safety policies, and Department for Transport (DfT) regulations, including tachograph rules and driving hours.
- Maintain accurate records of deliveries, mileage, fuel consumption, and vehicle maintenance logs.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, warehouse personnel, and customers regarding delivery schedules, delays, and any issues encountered.
- Ensure timely and efficient delivery of goods, navigating routes using GPS and local knowledge.
- Handle delivery documentation, including proof of delivery (PODs), manifests, and invoices.
- Represent the company professionally at all times, interacting courteously with clients and the public.
- Maintain cleanliness and basic upkeep of the assigned vehicle.
Required Skills
- Valid UK HGV Class 1 (CE) or Class 2 (C) driving license.
- Valid Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) card.
- Valid Digital Tachograph Card.
- Minimum of 2 years (24 months) commercial driving experience.
- Proven track record of safe driving and adherence to road safety regulations.
- Excellent knowledge of UK road networks and traffic laws.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to perform physical tasks associated with loading/unloading and vehicle maintenance checks.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with various types of cargo and vehicle configurations (e.g., curtainsiders, refrigerated units).
- Familiarity with Caerphilly and Cardiff local delivery routes.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to identify and report vehicle faults.
- Problem-solving abilities and adaptability to changing schedules or routes.
