Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Tug Boat Operator to join our client’s dynamic team, responsible for critical operations within the bustling waterways of Leipzig, Saxony. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in supporting commercial shipping, infrastructure projects, and maintaining the efficiency of our inland port system. As a Tug Boat Operator, you will be instrumental in the safe and efficient maneuvering of various vessels, including barges, dredgers, and other watercraft, through canals and rivers. Your day-to-day will involve precise navigation, ensuring the secure docking and undocking of large vessels, and providing essential assistance to larger ships. Key Responsibilities
- Operate tugboats safely and efficiently in designated waterways, canals, and rivers.
- Assist in the docking, undocking, and maneuvering of barges, dredgers, and other vessels.
- Ensure strict adherence to all maritime laws, regulations, and safety protocols.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections, routine maintenance, and minor repairs on the tugboat.
- Navigate vessels using radar, GPS, charts, and other navigational equipment.
- Communicate effectively with port authorities, pilots, crew members, and ground personnel.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies, including man overboard, fire, and mechanical failures.
- Maintain accurate logbooks and records of vessel operations, maintenance, and incidents.
- Oversee the securing and unsecuring of tow lines and other rigging.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to maintain licenses and enhance skills.
Required Skills
- Valid Tug Boat Operator license/certification appropriate for German inland waterways.
- Minimum 3 years (36 months) of proven experience as a Tug Boat Operator.
- Comprehensive knowledge of navigation rules, maritime safety regulations, and emergency procedures.
- Proficiency in operating navigational equipment (radar, GPS, electronic charts).
- Strong mechanical aptitude for basic vessel maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and make critical decisions under pressure.
- Physical fitness to perform duties in various weather conditions and challenging environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with specific vessel types operating on the Elbe and other Saxon waterways.
- Advanced First Aid and CPR certification.
- Additional maritime certifications or specialized training.
- German language proficiency (B1 level or higher) for communication with local authorities.
