Key Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians and livestock officers during examinations, treatments, surgeries, and vaccinations.
  • Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely, including various livestock and companion animals.
  • Prepare examination and surgical rooms, ensuring cleanliness, sterilization of instruments, and proper stocking of supplies.
  • Administer medications, fluids, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Perform laboratory tasks such as collecting samples (blood, urine, feces), running tests, and preparing slides.
  • Educate animal owners and farmers on animal health, nutrition, hygiene, and preventive care practices.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including medical histories, treatments, and billing.
  • Assist with clinic reception duties, scheduling appointments, and managing client inquiries.
  • Participate in community outreach programs, vaccination campaigns, and disease surveillance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and animal welfare regulations.
  • Maintain inventory of clinic supplies and medications, placing orders as needed.

Required Skills

  • Diploma in Animal Health, Animal Production, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Proven experience in animal handling and restraint techniques.
  • Strong understanding of basic animal anatomy, physiology, and common diseases.
  • Proficiency in basic veterinary laboratory procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse clients and colleagues.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to animal care.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili; knowledge of local languages (e.g., Somali) is a significant advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of practical experience in an animal clinic, veterinary practice, or livestock development program.
  • Experience working in arid and semi-arid regions with pastoralist communities.
  • Certification in veterinary first aid.
  • Basic computer literacy for record-keeping and communication.
  • Ability to drive a motorcycle (with a valid license) for field outreach.
