Job Description
This role is crucial for the smooth operation of our partner animal clinic located in the bustling Valley Arcade area of Nairobi. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will be the backbone of daily operations, providing essential support to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and the administrative team. Your primary goal will be to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our animal patients and their human companions. Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures.
- Prepare and maintain examination rooms, surgical suites, and treatment areas, ensuring cleanliness and organization.
- Sterilize surgical instruments and equipment, maintaining strict aseptic techniques.
- Provide compassionate animal restraint during procedures and examinations.
- Monitor hospitalized animals, observing changes in behavior or condition and reporting to veterinary staff.
- Dispense medications as directed by veterinarians and educate clients on proper administration.
- Maintain accurate patient records, including medical histories and treatment logs.
- Handle client communication, including scheduling appointments, answering inquiries, and providing post-procedure care instructions.
- Perform laboratory duties such as preparing samples for analysis (e.g., blood, urine, fecal).
- Assist with inventory management, stocking supplies, and ensuring all necessary materials are available.
- Clean and maintain kennels, cages, and patient care areas, adhering to strict hygiene protocols.
- Provide comfort and emotional support to animals and their owners.
Required Skills
- Proven experience working with animals, preferably in a veterinary setting.
- Strong understanding of animal behavior and safe handling techniques.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- High level of empathy, patience, and compassion for animals.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications for record-keeping.
- Physical stamina and ability to lift and restrain animals up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate or Diploma in Veterinary Assisting, Animal Health, or a related field.
- Experience with veterinary software (e.g., Avimark, Cornerstone).
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
- First Aid certification for animals.
- Prior experience in client education regarding animal care.
