Job Description

Zanzibar Ports Corporation is seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented, and technologically proficient Warehouse System Operator to join our bustling logistics team in Chukwani, Zanzibar City. This role offers flexible hours, ideal for individuals seeking to balance work with other commitments while contributing significantly to our operational efficiency. As a Warehouse System Operator, you will be at the heart of our storage and distribution activities, responsible for managing inventory, optimizing warehouse space, and ensuring the smooth flow of goods using advanced warehouse management systems (WMS). Your primary objective will be to maintain accurate records, oversee inbound and outbound shipments, and ensure strict compliance with all safety and operational procedures. This position requires a proactive individual with strong analytical skills, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to work effectively and efficiently within a fast-paced, high-volume environment. You will collaborate closely with other logistics personnel, port authorities, and external partners, ensuring seamless coordination from port arrival to final dispatch. Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor the Warehouse Management System (WMS) to accurately track inventory, process orders, and manage stock levels.
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound shipments, including precise receiving, efficient storing, accurate picking, careful packing, and timely dispatching of goods.
  • Conduct regular physical inventory counts and reconcile any discrepancies, ensuring data integrity and accuracy within the WMS.
  • Optimize warehouse layout and storage locations for maximum efficiency, accessibility, and safety.
  • Generate comprehensive reports on warehouse performance, inventory status, operational metrics, and throughput.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all safety regulations, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality standards within the warehouse environment.
  • Troubleshoot minor system issues and work closely with IT support to resolve more complex technical problems related to the WMS.
  • Provide training and guidance to new warehouse staff on WMS usage and best practices for inventory management and system operations.
  • Operate material handling equipment (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks) safely and efficiently, if certified and required.
  • Communicate effectively with freight forwarders, customs officials, and internal departments to facilitate smooth cargo movement and resolve issues.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance warehouse operations, reduce costs, and improve overall productivity.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) such as SAP EWM, Oracle WMS, or similar industry-standard platforms.
  • Strong understanding of inventory management principles, supply chain logistics, and warehouse operations.
  • Excellent data entry and record-keeping skills with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting of computer hardware and software system issues.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel for data analysis, Word for documentation, Outlook for communication).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities to identify and resolve operational bottlenecks.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for clear reporting and team collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a cohesive team in a dynamic environment.
  • Physical ability to perform typical warehouse duties, including occasional lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Certification in material handling equipment operation (e.g., forklift license, reach truck certification).
  • Experience with lean manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies applied in a warehouse setting.
  • Knowledge of customs procedures, import/export regulations, and international shipping protocols.
  • Familiarity with occupational safety and health standards (OSHA, local regulations) in a warehousing context.
  • Fluency in Swahili is considered a significant advantage for effective local communication.
