Key Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently collect waste and recycling materials from residential and commercial locations along designated routes.
- Operate collection equipment, including lifting mechanisms, compactors, and automated arms, in a safe and responsible manner.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting any defects or issues promptly.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, traffic laws, and company operating procedures.
- Assist in the proper disposal of collected materials at transfer stations or landfills.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including keeping the collection vehicle tidy.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and the public.
- Handle unexpected situations or changes in route with flexibility and a positive attitude.
- Ensure all waste and recycling bins are returned to their proper place after collection.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proven ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs repeatedly.
- Strong work ethic and reliability, with a commitment to showing up on time and ready to work.
- Ability to work effectively in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).
- Excellent spatial awareness and attention to detail for safe navigation and collection.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
- Valid G-class driver’s license with a clean driving record (abstract may be required).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in waste collection, labour, or a similar physically demanding role.
- Knowledge of local waste disposal regulations and recycling guidelines.
- Familiarity with Guelph street layouts and routing.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
