Job Description

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is actively seeking dedicated Waste Collectors to join our Municipal Department team in Mandeville, Manchester Parish, for a critical Day Shift role. As a Waste Collector, you will be an integral part of our frontline operations, responsible for the systematic collection of residential and commercial waste across designated routes within Mandeville. Your daily tasks will involve operating specialized collection vehicles (under the supervision of a driver, if not also operating) and manually lifting and emptying refuse bins, ensuring that waste is securely loaded for transport to disposal sites. Key Responsibilities
- Efficiently collect and load solid waste from designated residential and commercial areas onto collection vehicles.
- Adhere strictly to assigned daily collection routes and schedules in Mandeville, Manchester Parish.
- Operate compaction mechanisms and other auxiliary equipment on waste collection vehicles safely and effectively (if applicable).
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting any defects or issues promptly.
- Ensure all waste is securely contained to prevent spillage during collection and transport.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including the proper care and sanitation of collection equipment.
- Comply with all NSWMA safety regulations, policies, and procedures, including the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Interact professionally and courteously with the public, addressing inquiries or concerns as appropriate.
- Report any non-compliance with waste disposal regulations or illegal dumping activities.
- Assist in the proper disposal of collected waste at designated transfer stations or landfills.
Required Skills
- High level of physical fitness and stamina to perform strenuous tasks, including heavy lifting and prolonged standing/walking.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions (sun, rain, heat).
- Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Basic literacy to understand instructions and safety signs.
- Valid General Driver's License (Class C or D) with a clean driving record, if operating vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in waste collection, sanitation, or a similar physically demanding role.
- Knowledge of local geography and street layouts within Mandeville and Manchester Parish.
- Certification in heavy equipment operation (e.g., garbage trucks, loaders).
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
