Job Description

This pivotal role demands a highly skilled and proactive Health & Safety Officer to champion a culture of safety and compliance within a bustling industrial estate in Ocho Rios, St. Ann. As a critical member of the operational team, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive health and safety programs that meet and exceed local regulatory requirements and international best practices. Your expertise will be key in safeguarding employees, protecting assets, and ensuring the smooth, uninterrupted flow of industrial operations.

You will be responsible for conducting thorough risk assessments, meticulously identifying potential hazards across diverse industrial environments – from manufacturing plants to warehousing and logistics facilities – and formulating effective, actionable mitigation strategies. A significant part of your role involves developing and delivering engaging, impactful safety training sessions for all levels of staff, fostering a deep understanding of safety protocols and emergency procedures. You will lead all incident investigations, meticulously determine root causes, and implement robust corrective actions to prevent recurrence, thereby contributing directly to a continuous improvement cycle for overall safety performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain robust Health & Safety policies and procedures in line with local regulations and international standards.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits across the industrial estate to identify hazards and implement preventative measures.
  • Lead and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) legislation and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with management and department heads to integrate safety best practices into daily operations.
  • Advise on the safe use of machinery, equipment, and hazardous materials.
  • Oversee emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire safety and first aid.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through regular communication, awareness campaigns, and employee engagement.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican OHS legislation and environmental regulations.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct thorough incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Proficient in developing and delivering engaging safety training.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for record-keeping and compliance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Recognized H&S certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, OSHA).
  • Experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS) implementation.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of industrial machinery and processes.
  • Fluency in additional languages (e.g., Spanish) is a plus.
