Job Description

As the Director of Learning & Development, you will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive L&D strategies that align with our business goals and foster a high-performance culture. You will identify key development needs across all departments, from entry-level staff to senior leadership, and craft bespoke programs that enhance skills, leadership capabilities, and overall employee engagement. Your expertise will guide the selection and deployment of innovative learning methodologies, including digital platforms, blended learning, workshops, and coaching, ensuring maximum effectiveness and measurable impact.

This role requires a blend of strategic vision, operational excellence, and a deep understanding of adult learning principles. You will manage the entire learning lifecycle, from needs assessment and curriculum development to program delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement. A significant part of your role will involve collaborating with departmental heads and senior management to understand specific training requirements, advocate for learning investments, and integrate L&D initiatives seamlessly into our talent management framework. You will also be responsible for building and mentoring a small L&D team, fostering their professional growth, and ensuring they are equipped with the latest tools and techniques to deliver outstanding results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive L&D strategy aligned with organizational goals and business objectives.
  • Conduct thorough training needs assessments across all organizational levels and departments to identify skill gaps and development opportunities.
  • Design, develop, and deliver engaging and effective learning programs and curriculum using various modalities (e.g., e-learning, workshops, coaching, mentorship).
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of L&D initiatives using key performance indicators (KPIs), feedback mechanisms, and ROI analysis.
  • Manage the L&D budget, resources, and vendor relationships efficiently to maximize impact and cost-effectiveness.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, professional development, and knowledge sharing within the organization.
  • Advise senior leadership on best practices in talent development, succession planning, and organizational capability building.
  • Build, lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing L&D team, ensuring their continuous professional growth.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and innovations in learning and development to ensure programs remain cutting-edge.
  • Ensure all L&D activities comply with relevant regulations, internal policies, and ethical standards.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 8 years) in designing and implementing large-scale L&D strategies and programs, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles, instructional design methodologies (ADDIE, SAM), and blended learning approaches.
  • Exceptional leadership, coaching, and team management skills with a track record of developing talent.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal abilities, with a capacity to influence and engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in utilizing Learning Management Systems (LMS) and e-learning authoring tools.
  • Strategic thinking with a results-oriented mindset, capable of translating business needs into effective learning solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with experience in data-driven decision making for L&D initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and senior management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Education, or a closely related field.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., Certified Professional in Talent Development – CPTD, ATD Certification).
  • Experience working within a professional training, consulting, or an industry relevant to our business operations.
  • Familiarity with talent management software, HR analytics, and performance management systems.
  • Experience in a diverse cultural environment, particularly within Southern Africa, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and adaptability.
