Job Description
We are seeking a highly accomplished and results-oriented Chief Counsel to lead our legal and compliance functions in the Chegutu region, Mashonaland West Province. This pivotal role requires an individual with profound legal expertise, strategic acumen, and impeccable judgment to navigate the complex legal landscape of the mining industry in Zimbabwe. The Chief Counsel will be the primary legal advisor to the regional management team, ensuring all operations, decisions, and strategies align with local and international laws, corporate governance standards, and best practices.
This is more than just a legal advisory role; it is a strategic partnership opportunity. You will be instrumental in shaping the company’s legal framework, mitigating risks, and supporting sustainable growth initiatives. The successful candidate will oversee all legal aspects, including corporate governance, litigation management, contract negotiation, regulatory compliance, environmental law, employment law, and intellectual property. You will be expected to provide proactive and preventive legal guidance, identify potential legal exposures, and develop robust strategies to safeguard the company’s interests.
Your day-to-day will involve hands-on engagement with various departments, from operations and human resources to finance and environmental health and safety. You will draft and review a wide array of legal documents, represent the company in legal proceedings (or manage external counsel), and conduct training sessions to enhance legal awareness across the organization. Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive and strategic legal advice to the regional management team and various departments on all corporate and operational matters.
- Oversee and manage all regional legal affairs, including litigation, arbitration, and other dispute resolution processes.
- Ensure rigorous compliance with all applicable Zimbabwean laws, regulations, permits, and licenses relevant to mining operations, environmental protection, health and safety, and corporate governance.
- Draft, review, negotiate, and finalize complex commercial contracts, agreements, and legal documentation related to procurement, supply chain, land tenure, exploration, and joint ventures.
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal legal policies, procedures, and training programs to mitigate legal risks and promote ethical conduct.
- Manage external legal counsel effectively, ensuring cost-efficient and high-quality legal representation.
- Advise on employment law matters, industrial relations, and human resources policies to ensure compliance with labor laws.
- Stay abreast of changes in legislation and regulatory frameworks impacting the mining sector and proactively advise the company on potential implications.
- Represent the company in discussions and negotiations with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and other external stakeholders.
- Lead and mentor a small legal support team, fostering professional growth and a collaborative environment.
Required Skills
- Admitted to practice law in Zimbabwe.
- Minimum of 10 years post-admission experience, with significant experience in corporate law, commercial law, or mining law.
- Proven track record in senior legal roles, preferably within the mining, heavy industry, or a highly regulated sector.
- Exceptional understanding of Zimbabwean corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and environmental legislation.
- Strong negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex litigation and dispute resolution processes.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and provide practical, solution-oriented legal advice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Law (LLM) or a relevant business qualification.
- Experience with international legal standards and best practices.
- Prior experience leading and developing a legal team.
- Proficiency in local languages (e.g., Shona, Ndebele) is an advantage.
- Familiarity with land rights and community engagement laws pertinent to mining.
