Job Description

We are actively seeking a highly skilled, dedicated, and compassionate Lab Technician to become an integral part of our esteemed medical team at Mediheal Hospital & Fertility Centre, strategically located in Nakuru. This challenging yet immensely rewarding full-time, on-site hospital role is absolutely critical to our mission of providing accurate, timely, and life-saving diagnostic services, thereby directly enhancing patient care and treatment outcomes. As a Lab Technician, your primary responsibilities will encompass the precise and efficient performance of a comprehensive spectrum of laboratory procedures across various disciplines, including but not limited to hematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, and serology tests. You will be entrusted with operating and maintaining our cutting-edge, state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, ensuring its optimal performance through regular calibration and proactive troubleshooting of any minor technical issues that may arise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialized medical laboratory tests accurately and efficiently across various departments (hematology, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, serology, etc.).
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and troubleshooting minor technical issues.
  • Prepare reagents, solutions, and culture media according to established protocols and quality control guidelines.
  • Collect, process, and analyze patient samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) with precision and in strict compliance with safety regulations.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and organized records of all tests performed, results, and quality control data in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Ensure strict adherence to quality control procedures, internal hospital policies, and external regulatory standards (e.g., KMLTTB, ISO).
  • Interpret and report test results to medical staff in a timely, clear, and professional manner, highlighting critical findings.
  • Participate actively in the evaluation and implementation of new laboratory methods, technologies, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Manage laboratory supplies and inventory efficiently, ensuring adequate stock levels and proper storage conditions.
  • Adhere to all health and safety guidelines, including the proper handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous materials.
  • Contribute to fostering a clean, organized, and highly efficient laboratory workspace.
  • Participate in continuous professional development and mandatory training activities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in performing a wide range of medical laboratory tests across multiple disciplines.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory equipment operation, calibration, and routine maintenance.

  • Meticulous attention to detail and unwavering accuracy in all laboratory tasks.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with colleagues and medical staff.
  • Proficiency in using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and standard computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • In-depth understanding of quality control and quality assurance principles in a medical laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated adherence to ethical principles, strict patient confidentiality, and stringent safety regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) with a valid practicing license is mandatory.
  • At least 2 years of practical experience in a busy medical hospital laboratory.
  • Experience with advanced diagnostic techniques and specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Familiarity with hospital accreditation standards (e.g., JCI, COG, ISO 15189).
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development and ongoing learning.
