Key Responsibilities

  • Navigate vessels safely through designated pilotage waters, including rivers, channels, and port approaches.
  • Advise the vessel’s Master on safe navigation, passage planning, and compliance with local regulations and environmental protection measures.
  • Monitor prevailing weather, tide, and current conditions, adjusting pilotage plans as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with bridge crew, VTS (Vessel Traffic Services), port authorities, and tug masters.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments prior to and during pilotage operations.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local maritime laws, navigation technologies, and port procedures.
  • Ensure strict adherence to international maritime conventions (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL) and company safety management systems.
  • Report any incidents, accidents, or near-misses promptly and accurately.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development programs.

Required Skills

  • Valid Marine Pilot license/endorsement for relevant waters (e.g., German federal pilotage license or equivalent international certification).
  • Extensive sea experience as a Master Mariner (unlimited) or Chief Mate.
  • Profound knowledge of maritime navigation, ship handling, and bridge resource management.
  • Exceptional decision-making capabilities and problem-solving skills under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and German, both verbal and written.
  • Strong understanding of international and national maritime regulations.
  • Proficiency in radar, ECDIS, AIS, and other modern navigation aids.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties aboard vessels in varying conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in complex port operations or river pilotage.
  • Additional certifications in specialized vessel types (e.g., LNG carriers, large crude oil carriers).
  • Familiarity with environmental protection protocols specific to inland waterways and coastal areas.
  • Leadership and mentorship experience within a maritime context.
