Job Description

Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer with a passion for industrial operations and a proven track record in optimizing factory performance? Menengai Oil Refineries Ltd., a powerhouse in Kenya’s Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector, is seeking a dynamic and highly skilled Mechanical Engineer (Industrial) to join our esteemed team in Nakuru. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the seamless operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of our sophisticated production machinery and expansive factory infrastructure. This encompasses a broad range of equipment, from high-speed packaging lines and large-scale processing units for edible oils to robust machinery used in soap and detergent manufacturing.

You will leverage your deep technical expertise to enhance equipment reliability, drastically reduce unplanned downtime, and drive efficiency across various production lines. This position demands a proactive approach to problem-solving, an unwavering commitment to upholding the highest safety standards, and a keen eye for identifying and implementing innovative engineering solutions that align with our strategic objectives. You will be a key player in the entire lifecycle of mechanical projects, from initial planning and design review to execution and post-implementation analysis, ensuring that all mechanical systems function optimally to meet our stringent production targets, quality benchmarks, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial mechanical equipment and machinery.
  • Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical failures, providing swift and effective resolutions.
  • Lead and participate in engineering projects, including equipment upgrades, new installations, and facility expansions.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, industry standards, and environmental policies.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for mechanical failures and implement corrective and preventative actions.
  • Optimize factory layouts and processes to improve efficiency, productivity, and safety.
  • Prepare technical reports, maintenance logs, and project documentation.
  • Collaborate with production, electrical, and quality assurance teams to achieve operational targets.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technical staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of proven experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial machinery, hydraulics, pneumatics, and rotating equipment.
  • Proficiency in Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and P&IDs.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional engineering registration (EBK or equivalent).
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Familiarity with FMCG manufacturing processes, particularly in edible oils, soaps, or detergents.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Experience with PLC systems and industrial automation.
