Job Description

Career.zycto is actively seeking a highly skilled, dedicated, and safety-conscious Railway Technician – Track & Equipment Maintenance to join our client’s essential team based in Bishopbriggs, Glasgow. This pivotal role is directly responsible for upholding the safety, reliability, and operational efficiency of a critical section of the region’s railway infrastructure. As a hands-on Railway Technician, you will be at the forefront of maintaining the network, performing rigorous routine inspections, executing preventative maintenance schedules, and responding promptly to reactive repairs across tracks, points, crossings, signalling apparatus, and potentially overhead line equipment (OLE). Your precision and expertise will be indispensable in ensuring the seamless and secure operation of both passenger and freight services, consistently adhering to the most stringent safety and operational integrity standards.

Operating within a demanding yet rewarding environment, you will encounter diverse technical challenges that will test and refine both your practical engineering acumen and your strategic problem-solving capabilities. This position necessitates an unwavering commitment to established safety protocols, an exceptional degree of meticulous attention to detail, and the innate ability to collaborate effectively within a highly skilled and cohesive team. You will regularly operate and maintain a range of specialized tools and heavy machinery, interpret complex technical diagrams with accuracy, and meticulously document all completed work and observed conditions. Given the inherent nature of railway infrastructure maintenance, this role requires working predominantly outdoors in all weather conditions and often involves unsocial hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, specifically scheduled to minimize disruption to live rail services. If you possess a profound passion for railway engineering, an unyielding dedication to safety, and aspire to play a crucial role in maintaining the structural backbone of our national transport system, we wholeheartedly encourage you to apply and bring your vital skills to this impactful opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive routine inspections of railway track infrastructure, including rails, sleepers, ballast, points, and crossings, meticulously identifying and documenting any defects or signs of wear.
  • Execute preventative and reactive maintenance tasks such as rail grinding, track component replacement (e.g., re-sleepering, re-railing), and precise ballast management to maintain track integrity.
  • Diagnose and skillfully rectify faults on a diverse range of mechanical and electrical trackside equipment, ensuring optimal performance and safety standards are consistently met.
  • Safely and efficiently operate specialized plant, hand tools, and heavy machinery integral to railway maintenance operations, strictly adhering to all operational guidelines and safety procedures.
  • Ensure all work undertaken rigorously complies with Network Rail's stringent safety standards, operational procedures, and all relevant industry regulations and best practices.
  • Accurately complete all necessary documentation, detailed reports, and fault logs for all maintenance activities, providing clear, concise, and auditable records of work performed.
  • Collaborate effectively and professionally with team members, supervisors, and other operational staff to ensure coordinated, efficient, and successful project execution.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to emergency call-outs and unplanned incidents, demonstrating adaptability, quick thinking, and effective problem-solving capabilities under pressure.
  • Adhere rigorously to all health and safety regulations, including strict compliance with Personal Track Safety (PTS) requirements and other railway-specific safety mandates.
  • Actively participate in ongoing training and development programs to maintain and enhance technical competencies, industry knowledge, and relevant certifications.

Required Skills

  • NVQ/SVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., Rail Engineering, Mechanical Engineering)
  • Possession of a valid Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification
  • Demonstrable practical experience of at least 3 years in railway track or equipment maintenance
  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical aptitude with proven diagnostic skills
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and meticulous attention to detail
  • Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and engineering specifications
  • Excellent communication and collaborative teamwork abilities
  • Good physical fitness and ability to work effectively outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Unwavering commitment to upholding health and safety regulations and procedures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Full UK Driving License
  • Relevant COSS (Controller of Site Safety) or OLE (Overhead Line Equipment) competencies
  • Extensive experience with Network Rail standards and operational procedures
  • Valid First Aid certification
  • Additional welding or specialized plant operation certifications
