Job Description

Join Sawa Bakery, a leader in quality baked goods, as a Baker Assistant for our morning bread production team in Gakenke, Northern Province. This full-time, on-site role is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and hardworking individual eager to learn the art and science of bread making. You will be an integral part of our early morning shift, contributing directly to the daily output of a variety of high-quality breads that our customers cherish. We are looking for someone who is not only passionate about food and baking but also possesses a strong work ethic, a meticulous eye for detail, and an unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and quality in a food production environment.

As a Baker Assistant, you will work closely alongside our experienced head bakers, assisting them in all stages of the bread production process. Your daily tasks will range from accurately measuring and preparing ingredients according to precise recipes, operating and maintaining professional bakery equipment such as mixers, dough proofers, and industrial ovens, to shaping dough, monitoring baking times, and ensuring each loaf meets Sawa Bakery’s esteemed quality benchmarks. This role demands attention to detail, physical stamina to handle ingredients and stand for extended periods, and a positive, proactive attitude towards collaborative work. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist head bakers in the preparation, mixing, shaping, and baking of various bread products.
  • Accurately measure and weigh ingredients according to recipes and production schedules.
  • Operate and maintain bakery equipment, including mixers, ovens, and proofers, adhering strictly to safety guidelines.
  • Monitor dough proofing and baking processes to ensure optimal product quality and consistency.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workstation, ensuring strict adherence to hygiene and food safety standards.
  • Package and prepare baked goods efficiently for dispatch and local delivery.
  • Receive, inspect, and properly store ingredients, rotating stock to ensure freshness and minimize waste.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, ingredient shortages, or quality concerns to the supervisor promptly.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team to meet daily production targets.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures, especially those related to quality control, safety, and workplace conduct.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of baking processes or a strong willingness to learn and develop skills.
  • Ability to follow recipes and instructions accurately and consistently.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality products.
  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods, lift heavy bags of ingredients (up to 25kg), and work in a warm, fast-paced environment.
  • High level of reliability and punctuality, particularly for early morning shifts.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills for effective teamwork.
  • Ability to work efficiently and adapt to a dynamic production schedule.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of personal hygiene and workplace cleanliness.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a bakery, commercial kitchen, or food production environment (even informal).
  • Knowledge of basic food safety and handling procedures (e.g., HACCP principles).
  • Diploma or certificate in baking, culinary arts, or a related field is a plus.
  • Fluency in Kinyarwanda; proficiency in English is an added advantage.
