Job Description

SeedCo Zimbabwe Limited is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Biologist to join our dynamic research and development team in Harare. This pivotal full-time role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in plant biology, genetics, and agronomy, directly impacting crop improvement and food security in Zimbabwe and beyond. The successful candidate will be instrumental in designing, executing, and analyzing biological experiments related to seed development, plant disease resistance, pest management, and stress tolerance. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement biological experiments to investigate plant growth, development, and response to various environmental factors, pests, and diseases.
  • Conduct comprehensive laboratory analyses including molecular techniques (e.g., PCR, DNA extraction), microscopy, and biochemical assays.
  • Manage and execute field trials, ensuring accurate data collection on plant performance, yield, and resistance traits.
  • Analyze experimental data using appropriate statistical software and interpret findings to draw meaningful scientific conclusions.
  • Prepare detailed scientific reports, compelling presentations, and comprehensive technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams including plant breeders, geneticists, agronomists, and entomologists to integrate biological insights into breeding programs.
  • Stay abreast of the latest scientific advancements and methodologies in plant biology, genetics, and agricultural science through continuous learning.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment to the highest standards and ensure strict compliance with safety protocols and quality control measures.
  • Contribute to the development and optimization of new research protocols and methodologies to enhance experimental efficiency and accuracy.

Required Skills

  • Strong foundational knowledge in plant biology, genetics, molecular biology, or a related scientific field.
  • Proficiency in essential laboratory techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and basic microscopy.
  • Demonstrated experience in experimental design, meticulous data collection, and robust statistical analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, capable of conveying complex scientific information clearly.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as an integral part of a diverse team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and acute critical thinking skills to address complex biological challenges.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for data management and presentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Plant Biology, Genetics, Agronomy, Biotechnology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience with specific plant analysis software or bioinformatics tools.
  • Prior experience in agricultural research, the seed industry, or plant breeding programs.
  • Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and comprehensive field trial management.
  • Knowledge of common plant diseases, pests, and abiotic stresses affecting African crops.
