Protea Hotel by Marriott Zanzibar Mbweni is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Entry-Level Crop Irrigation Assistant to join our dedicated groundskeeping team. As a Crop Irrigation Assistant, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the health and vitality of our resort’s extensive gardens, lawns, and specific cultivated areas. You will be responsible for ensuring that all plant life receives adequate and timely water, a critical component of successful landscape management in Zanzibar’s climate. Under the guidance of experienced supervisors, you will learn and implement various irrigation techniques, monitor plant health, and contribute to the overall beauty and ecological balance of our property. This role is perfect for someone who is a quick learner, enjoys working outdoors, possesses a strong work ethic, and is committed to contributing to a visually stunning and environmentally responsible resort setting. Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the daily operation and maintenance of the resort's irrigation systems, including checking for leaks, blockages, and malfunctions.
- Monitor soil moisture levels and plant health to determine irrigation needs across different areas of the property.
- Operate and adjust irrigation equipment, including sprinklers, drip systems, and hoses, according to schedules and plant requirements.
- Support the groundskeeping team in planting, weeding, pruning, and other general garden maintenance tasks as needed.
- Report any issues or repair needs related to irrigation systems or plant health to the supervisor promptly.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of irrigation tools and equipment.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and environmental guidelines established by the resort.
- Learn and apply sustainable irrigation practices to conserve water resources and promote ecological balance.
- Document irrigation schedules and water usage as required by management.
- Collaborate effectively and respectfully with other team members to achieve departmental goals and maintain a harmonious work environment.
Required Skills
- Physical stamina and ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Willingness to learn new skills and take direction from supervisors.
- Basic understanding of the importance of watering plants for their health and growth.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Fluency in Kiswahili and basic conversational English for communication purposes.
