Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Solicitor with a specific focus on American legal matters, to join our expanding team in the vibrant city of Edinburgh. This unique role is designed for a legal professional who possesses an in-depth understanding of US law and is adept at navigating the complexities of cross-border legal issues, particularly as they pertain to American clients living or working in the UK, or those with interests spanning both jurisdictions. You will play a pivotal role in advising individuals, families, and businesses on a wide array of legal challenges, from immigration and residency to corporate compliance, tax implications, estate planning, and family law considerations involving US citizens.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice to American clients on matters concerning UK and US law, including but not limited to immigration, residency, property, taxation, corporate formation, and estate planning.
  • Conduct thorough legal research across both UK and US jurisdictions to ensure accurate and comprehensive guidance.
  • Draft and review legal documents, contracts, agreements, and correspondence, ensuring compliance with relevant legal standards.
  • Represent clients in negotiations, mediations, and potentially court proceedings, as required.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external counsel (both UK and US-based) to deliver holistic client solutions.
  • Stay abreast of changes in US and UK law that may impact American expatriates or US-affiliated businesses.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted advisor.
  • Participate in business development activities, including networking and contributing to thought leadership.
  • Ensure strict adherence to professional ethics and regulatory requirements.

Required Skills

  • Qualified as a Solicitor in Scotland (or eligible for immediate qualification/transfer).
  • J.D. from an accredited US law school and admitted to practice in at least one US state bar.
  • Minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience (PQE) in a legal practice, with a significant focus on US law.
  • Demonstrable experience advising on cross-border legal issues between the US and UK.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in legal research tools and case management software.
  • High level of integrity and commitment to client service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in specific areas such as US tax law, immigration law, or international estate planning.
  • Fluency in additional languages is a plus, though not required.
  • Prior experience working with an international client base or within a multinational law firm.
  • A track record of successful client acquisition and retention.
