Job Description
Career.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Part-Time Interpreter to join our dedicated team in the vibrant Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. This crucial role involves facilitating effective communication between individuals who speak different languages, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and cultural sensitivity in every interaction. As an Interpreter, you will play a pivotal role in empowering community members to access vital services, participate fully in discussions, and understand important information without language barriers.
We are looking for an individual with exceptional verbal fluency in at least two languages (one of which must be English), a deep understanding of cultural nuances, and an unwavering commitment to confidentiality and impartiality. Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate, complete, and culturally appropriate interpretation services between English and at least one other specified language.
- Facilitate communication in various settings, including one-on-one sessions, group meetings, and community events.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines and professional standards for interpreters.
- Convey the meaning and intent of messages clearly and impartially, without adding, omitting, or distorting information.
- Manage terminology and cultural nuances to ensure effective cross-cultural communication.
- Act as a cultural broker, explaining cultural context when necessary to avoid misunderstandings.
- Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials and familiarizing oneself with subject matter.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and service recipients to ensure a positive and productive experience.
Required Skills
- Native or near-native fluency in English and at least one other language relevant to the Pilsen community (e.g., Spanish).
- Proven experience in consecutive and/or simultaneous interpretation.
- Excellent active listening, memory retention, and note-taking skills.
- Strong understanding of cultural differences and ability to navigate sensitive topics with discretion.
- Exceptional verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain professionalism, impartiality, and confidentiality at all times.
- Strong ethical compass and adherence to interpreter codes of conduct.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in linguistics, translation, communications, or a related field.
- Certification from a recognized interpreting body (e.g., medical interpreter certification, court interpreter certification).
- Previous experience working in community services, healthcare, or educational settings.
