Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough analysis of mortgage applications, including income, assets, credit history, and property valuations, to determine borrower eligibility and risk.
- Verify documentation submitted by applicants, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to regulatory requirements and lending policies.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with mortgage advisors, brokers, and applicants to gather additional information, clarify discrepancies, and manage expectations.
- Make sound underwriting decisions within established lending authorities, escalating complex cases to senior underwriters or management as required.
- Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with mortgage applications, safeguarding the financial interests of the client and ensuring compliance.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry regulations, lending policies, and market conditions affecting mortgage underwriting within the UK.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of underwriting processes and procedures, offering insights for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Ensure all activities adhere to the Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) principles and other relevant conduct regulations issued by the FCA.
- Collaborate with sales, operations, and compliance teams to ensure a seamless and efficient application process from submission to completion.
- Provide training and support to junior team members or new recruits as needed, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) as a Mortgage Underwriter or similar role within a financial services environment.
- Strong understanding of mortgage products, lending criteria, and regulatory frameworks (e.g., FCA rules, MCOB) in a relevant market.
- Excellent analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and identify key risks.
- Proficiency in assessing credit risk, conducting income calculations, and evaluating property valuations accurately.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of documentation review and decision-making.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, for effective stakeholder engagement.
