Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Seismologist to join our dynamic team in Whitehorse, Yukon. This full-time position offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to vital research and operational projects focused on understanding seismic activity and its implications across the region. As a Seismologist, you will play a crucial role in the design, deployment, and maintenance of seismic monitoring networks, as well as the advanced analysis of seismic data. Your work will directly support our mission to enhance public safety, inform infrastructure development, and advance our scientific understanding of the Earth’s processes.

Your responsibilities will span the entire lifecycle of seismic data, from field acquisition in challenging northern environments to sophisticated data processing, interpretation, and reporting. This includes working with various types of seismic data, such as natural earthquake sequences, induced seismicity, and microseismic events. You will be instrumental in developing and implementing new methodologies for data analysis, utilizing state-of-the-art software and instrumentation. Collaboration with geologists, geophysicists, and engineers will be a daily occurrence, as you contribute your expertise to multidisciplinary projects. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and maintain seismic monitoring equipment and networks in various field conditions, including remote locations.
  • Process, analyze, and interpret large volumes of seismic data, including waveform analysis, event location, and magnitude determination.
  • Develop and implement advanced seismic data processing and analysis techniques, utilizing industry-standard software and programming languages.
  • Conduct research into regional seismicity patterns, tectonic activity, and potential geological hazards.
  • Generate comprehensive technical reports, presentations, and scientific publications detailing research findings and operational insights.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, academic institutions, and industry partners.
  • Ensure data quality control and adherence to best practices in seismic monitoring and data management.
  • Provide expert advice on seismic risk assessments and contribute to emergency response protocols.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Seismology, Geophysics, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in seismic data acquisition, processing, and interpretation.
  • Proficiency with seismic processing software (e.g., SeisComP3, ObsPy, SAC, Antelope).
  • Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or similar languages for data analysis and automation.
  • Demonstrated experience with seismic network design and field operations.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Proven ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in Arctic or remote environments.
  • Knowledge of induced seismicity phenomena and monitoring techniques.
  • Familiarity with geological and tectonic settings of the Yukon and surrounding regions.
  • Experience with machine learning applications in seismology.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate off-road vehicles for field work.
