Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Boat Captain to lead fishing operations in the Thika (Kiambu County) region of Kenya. This pivotal role requires an experienced mariner with a strong understanding of local waters, fishing techniques, and vessel management. As a Boat Captain, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the fishing vessel, ensuring adherence to all maritime regulations, company policies, and sustainable fishing practices. You will be the linchpin of our operations, guiding your crew through daily fishing expeditions, navigating challenging conditions, and optimizing catch yields while prioritizing safety above all else. This role is perfect for a proactive leader who thrives in a dynamic marine environment and possesses an unwavering commitment to both operational excellence and environmental stewardship. You will play a crucial role in planning fishing trips, managing equipment, maintaining logs, and ensuring the well-being and productivity of your crew. We are looking for someone who can not only navigate by charts and GPS but also by instinct, understanding the subtle shifts in weather and marine life that lead to successful and safe expeditions. Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate and navigate the fishing vessel in accordance with international and local maritime laws, company policies, and best practices.
  • Lead, train, and manage the fishing crew, ensuring clear communication, teamwork, and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Plan and execute fishing expeditions, including route planning, weather monitoring, and identification of prime fishing grounds.
  • Oversee all fishing activities, including deployment and retrieval of fishing gear, catch handling, processing, and storage.
  • Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance on the vessel and all onboard equipment (engines, navigation systems, fishing gear).
  • Maintain accurate logbooks, catch records, fuel consumption, and other operational documentation.
  • Ensure strict compliance with environmental regulations and promote sustainable fishing practices.
  • Manage onboard inventory, supplies, and provisions for fishing trips.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies, including mechanical failures, medical incidents, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Report regularly to shore management on operational status, challenges, and successes.

Required Skills

  • Valid Certificate of Competency (COC) for a fishing vessel captain.
  • Extensive experience (minimum 4 years) as a Boat Captain in fishing operations, preferably in East African waters.
  • Proficiency in marine navigation systems (GPS, Radar, Sonar, ECDIS).
  • Strong knowledge of relevant maritime laws, safety regulations (STCW, SOLAS), and fishing regulations.
  • Proven leadership and crew management skills.
  • Excellent communication and decision-making abilities under pressure.
  • Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and basic vessel maintenance.
  • First Aid and Sea Survival certifications.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced marine safety training.
  • Experience with sustainable fishing certifications (e.g., MSC).
  • Knowledge of local marine ecosystems and fish species in Kenya.
  • Proficiency in using electronic logbooks and data collection software.
  • A passion for marine conservation and responsible fishing.
