Career.zycto is seeking an experienced and empathetic Full-Time Substance Abuse Counselor to join our dynamic team in York, Toronto. As a Substance Abuse Counselor, you will be at the forefront of client care, conducting comprehensive assessments, developing personalized treatment plans, and delivering individual and group counseling sessions. You will work within a collaborative multidisciplinary team, ensuring a holistic approach to recovery that addresses not only the addiction itself but also co-occurring mental health disorders, social determinants of health, and family dynamics. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough intake assessments, including biopsychosocial histories and diagnostic evaluations, to determine client needs and eligibility for services.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans in collaboration with clients, setting measurable goals and objectives.
  • Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions using evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and relapse prevention strategies.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support as needed, ensuring client safety and well-being.
  • Educate clients and their families on addiction, recovery processes, and available community resources.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team (e.g., psychiatrists, social workers, case managers) to ensure integrated care and continuity of services.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely client records in accordance with professional standards and organizational policies.
  • Participate in regular supervision, team meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Advocate for clients' needs and rights within the healthcare system and broader community.
  • Monitor client progress, adjust treatment plans as necessary, and assist with aftercare planning and discharge.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Registered Psychotherapist (RP), Registered Social Worker (RSW), or Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) in Ontario.
  • Minimum 3 years of direct experience in substance abuse counseling or addiction treatment.
  • Proficiency in evidence-based therapeutic interventions (e.g., CBT, DBT, MI, Relapse Prevention).
  • Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and treatment planning skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and cultural backgrounds.
  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and standard office software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with co-occurring mental health disorders.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices.
  • Bilingualism (English and other languages commonly spoken in Toronto).
  • Experience in a residential or outpatient addiction treatment setting.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario).
