As a Substance Abuse Counselor, you will be at the forefront of client care, conducting comprehensive assessments, developing personalized treatment plans, and delivering individual and group counseling sessions. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough intake assessments, including biopsychosocial histories and diagnostic evaluations, to determine client needs and eligibility for services.
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans in collaboration with clients, setting measurable goals and objectives.
- Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions using evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and relapse prevention strategies.
- Provide crisis intervention and support as needed, ensuring client safety and well-being.
- Educate clients and their families on addiction, recovery processes, and available community resources.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team (e.g., psychiatrists, social workers, case managers) to ensure integrated care and continuity of services.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely client records in accordance with professional standards and organizational policies.
- Participate in regular supervision, team meetings, and professional development activities.
- Advocate for clients' needs and rights within the healthcare system and broader community.
- Monitor client progress, adjust treatment plans as necessary, and assist with aftercare planning and discharge.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
- Registered Psychotherapist (RP), Registered Social Worker (RSW), or Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) in Ontario.
- Minimum 3 years of direct experience in substance abuse counseling or addiction treatment.
- Proficiency in evidence-based therapeutic interventions (e.g., CBT, DBT, MI, Relapse Prevention).
- Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and treatment planning skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and cultural backgrounds.
- Crisis intervention and de-escalation skills.
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and standard office software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with co-occurring mental health disorders.
- Knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices.
- Bilingualism (English and other languages commonly spoken in Toronto).
- Experience in a residential or outpatient addiction treatment setting.
- Membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario).
