Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain VoIP infrastructure, including SIP trunks, SBCs, IP PBXs (e.g., Asterisk, FreePBX), and cloud communication platforms.
- Monitor VoIP system performance, identify potential issues, and implement proactive measures to ensure high availability and quality of service (QoS).
- Perform in-depth troubleshooting of complex voice-related problems, including call routing, audio quality, network connectivity, and interoperability issues.
- Configure and manage network devices (routers, switches, firewalls) to prioritize and optimize voice traffic.
- Collaborate with internal teams and clients to understand requirements, provide technical guidance, and deploy customized VoIP solutions.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for VoIP systems, configurations, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Stay current with emerging VoIP technologies, industry best practices, and security vulnerabilities, recommending and implementing improvements.
- Ensure compliance with security policies and regulatory standards for voice communication systems.
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical incident response as needed.
Required Skills
- 5+ years of experience as a VoIP Engineer or similar role.
- Profound understanding of VoIP protocols (SIP, RTP, SRTP, SCCP, H.323) and codecs (G.711, G.729).
- Expertise in configuring and troubleshooting IP PBX systems (e.g., Asterisk, FreePBX, Broadsoft, Cisco Call Manager).
- Strong knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, QoS, VPNs, routing, switching).
- Proficiency with Linux operating systems for VoIP server management.
- Experience with network monitoring tools and packet capture analysis (e.g., Wireshark).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to diagnose complex technical issues under pressure.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a remote, distributed team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunications, or a related field.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., Cisco CCNA Collaboration, CCNP Collaboration, CompTIA Network+, Microsoft 365 Certified: Teams Administrator Associate).
- Experience with cloud-based VoIP solutions (e.g., Microsoft Teams Phone System, Zoom Phone, 8×8, RingCentral).
- Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation.
- Knowledge of security best practices for VoIP environments.
- Experience with SBCs (Session Border Controllers) like Ribbon, Audiocodes, or Oracle Acme Packet.
