As a By-Law Enforcement Officer, you will be on the front lines, acting as a visible and accessible presence within the community. Your primary responsibility will be to proactively enforce municipal regulations related to property standards, parking, noise, waste management, animal control, and other community standards. This involves patrolling assigned areas, investigating complaints, gathering evidence, and taking appropriate enforcement actions, which may include issuing warnings, notices, and tickets.
Beyond enforcement, a key aspect of this role is public engagement and education. Key Responsibilities
- Patrol designated areas to ensure compliance with municipal by-laws and ordinances.
- Investigate complaints from the public regarding potential by-law infractions.
- Gather evidence, interview witnesses, and document findings accurately.
- Issue warnings, notices of contravention, and tickets as required.
- Educate the public on by-laws and promote voluntary compliance.
- De-escalate conflicts and mediate disputes related to by-law enforcement.
- Prepare detailed reports, statements, and maintain precise records of activities.
- Represent the organization in administrative hearings or court proceedings when necessary.
- Collaborate with other municipal departments, emergency services, and community groups.
- Respond to urgent by-law matters and emergencies as they arise.
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of municipal by-laws and enforcement procedures.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., word processing, email, database entry).
- Valid Connecticut Class D Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Previous experience in by-law enforcement, security, or a related public safety role.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR.
