Key Responsibilities
- Assist with planting, potting, transplanting, and general plant care tasks for various crops.
- Implement and monitor irrigation systems, ensuring optimal water delivery to plants.
- Participate in systematic scouting for pests and diseases, accurate identification, and application of approved basic control measures.
- Perform essential plant maintenance activities including weeding, pruning, thinning, and trellising.
- Support harvesting operations, ensuring proper handling, sorting, and packaging of horticultural products to maintain quality.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organization within growing areas, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored and sanitized.
- Monitor and record environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and light levels in greenhouses or outdoor growing spaces.
- Accurately collect and record data related to plant growth, treatment applications, and yield for reporting purposes.
- Strictly adhere to all health and safety protocols, operational guidelines, and environmental regulations.
- Actively engage in learning new horticultural techniques, sustainable practices, and innovative technologies as guided by supervisors.
Required Skills
- Genuine interest and passion for horticulture, agriculture, or plant sciences.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting up to 25kg, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Demonstrated strong work ethic, punctuality, and reliability.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions accurately and work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Basic observational skills for identifying plant health issues, pest infestations, or growth anomalies.
- Eagerness to learn, adapt to new tasks, and embrace new environments and technologies.
- Basic communication skills to interact with team members and supervisors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a C grade or equivalent vocational certificate.
- Any prior volunteer experience, personal gardening, or informal involvement in farming or plant care.
- Basic theoretical understanding of plant biology, soil science, or general agricultural principles.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and simple record keeping.
- Valid motorcycle or driver’s license (advantageous but not mandatory for this entry-level role).
