Job Description
We are actively seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Assistant to join a dynamic educational setting in Merrow, Guildford. This pivotal role involves providing essential support to students with a diverse range of special educational needs, fostering an inclusive learning environment, and helping each child reach their full potential. As a Special Education Assistant, you will work closely with classroom teachers and SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators) to implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and provide tailored assistance, ensuring students can access the curriculum and thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Your day-to-day will be varied and impactful, involving direct one-on-one support, small group instruction, and assistance within the general classroom setting. Key Responsibilities
- Provide individualized and small group support to students with special educational needs, both within the classroom and in dedicated learning environments.
- Assist teachers in implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and adapting learning materials to meet diverse student needs.
- Monitor student progress, record observations, and communicate effectively with teachers, parents, and other support staff.
- Help manage student behavior, employing positive behavior management strategies and fostering a calm, supportive classroom atmosphere.
- Facilitate student independence, social skills development, and participation in school activities.
- Prepare and organize learning resources and classroom materials under the direction of the class teacher.
- Support students during breaks, lunchtimes, and other non-lesson periods, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Attend and contribute to meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
- Provide personal care support to students as required, respecting dignity and privacy.
Required Skills
- Proven experience working with children or young people with special educational needs (SEN).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, colleagues, and parents.
- Patience, empathy, and a strong commitment to inclusive education.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Basic IT skills for record-keeping and resource preparation.
Preferred Qualifications
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or an equivalent qualification.
- Knowledge of various SEN conditions (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Dyslexia, SEMH).
- Experience with specific intervention strategies (e.g., PECS, Makaton, TEACCH).
- First Aid qualification.
