Job Description

Career.zycto is actively seeking a highly motivated and experienced Safety Officer to join our team in Machakos, Machakos County. This is a critical role responsible for upholding the highest standards of occupational health and safety across our operations. As a Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in creating and maintaining a safe working environment, preventing accidents, and ensuring full compliance with all local and national safety regulations and company policies. You will be the go-to expert for all safety-related matters, driving a culture of vigilance and proactive risk management.

Your day-to-day will involve more than just inspections; it’s about strategic planning, meticulous documentation, and impactful training. We’re looking for someone who can not only identify potential hazards but also develop and implement effective control measures. You will lead accident investigations, analyze trends, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence. This role demands a proactive individual with excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with all levels of staff, from management to frontline workers, to instill a strong safety ethos.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor occupational health and safety programs and policies.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and non-compliance issues.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions.
  • Provide comprehensive safety training and inductions to employees and contractors on safety procedures, emergency protocols, and hazard awareness.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all relevant local and national health and safety legislation (e.g., OSHA, WIBA) and company standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and risk assessments.
  • Advise management on safety-related matters, including new equipment, processes, and regulatory changes.
  • Prepare and present detailed safety reports and performance metrics.
  • Lead emergency response planning, drills, and coordination efforts.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness campaigns and continuous engagement with staff.

Required Skills

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • NEBOSH IGC or equivalent internationally recognized safety certification.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience as a Safety Officer or in a similar EHS role.
  • In-depth knowledge of Kenyan occupational health and safety legislation and best practices.
  • Proven ability to conduct risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the construction, manufacturing, or heavy industry sectors.
  • Advanced safety certifications (e.g., ISO 45001 Lead Auditor).
  • Fluency in both English and Swahili.
  • Experience with safety management systems and software.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.
