This role often involves working irregular hours, including nights and weekends, to minimise disruption to services, and requires physical fitness and a readiness to work in various weather conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs of railway tracks, signalling equipment, and associated infrastructure.
  • Perform track re-railing, re-sleepering, ballast management, and point maintenance to ensure track stability and alignment.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, and light plant equipment safely and effectively.
  • Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and environmental regulations, policies, and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Respond to and assist with emergency situations, including track defects, derailments, and adverse weather incidents, as required.
  • Complete detailed inspection reports, maintenance logs, and incident reports accurately and promptly.
  • Work effectively as part of a team, communicating clearly with colleagues, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development programs to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Assist with vegetation management and general site housekeeping within the railway corridor.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in a physically demanding outdoor role, preferably in construction, civil engineering, or rail.
  • Strong understanding and commitment to health and safety regulations, particularly within a railway environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and work instructions.
  • Proficiency in using a range of hand tools, power tools, and basic maintenance equipment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a close-knit team.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in a relevant engineering or construction discipline.
  • Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification (AC/DC).
  • Any relevant rail industry accreditations (e.g., COSS, Lookout).
  • Experience operating specific rail plant machinery.
  • First Aid certification.
