As a School Bus Driver, you are often the first and last school representative students encounter each day, making your impact profound. Key Responsibilities
- Operate school buses safely and efficiently on assigned routes and for special activities.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, reporting any mechanical defects or safety concerns promptly.
- Maintain appropriate discipline and a positive, safe atmosphere among students while on the bus, adhering to district policies.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, school personnel, and other community members.
- Adhere strictly to all traffic laws, federal, state, and local regulations, and school district transportation policies.
- Manage student behavior using positive reinforcement and established disciplinary procedures.
- Ensure students are picked up and dropped off at designated stops safely and punctually.
- Complete and submit all required reports, including mileage, student counts, and incident reports.
- Assist students with special needs, including proper use of adaptive equipment, as required.
Required Skills
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Clean driving record, free of major infractions or accidents.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and pre-employment drug screening.
- Current DOT physical examination and ability to pass future examinations.
- Excellent knowledge of state traffic laws and regulations pertaining to school bus operation.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and parents.
- Patience, calm demeanor, and ability to manage student behavior effectively.
- Physical ability to safely operate a large vehicle, perform inspections, and assist students as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- One to two years of previous experience as a school bus driver or professional commercial driver.
- Familiarity with Sitka, Alaska area roads, school locations, and local traffic patterns.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
- Basic mechanical aptitude to identify and report vehicle issues.
- Experience working with children of various age groups and backgrounds.
