Job Description
We are actively seeking a dedicated and compassionate Full-Time School Nurse to join a vibrant educational community located in Lazy Mountain, Palmer, Alaska. This pivotal role involves overseeing the health and wellness needs of students and staff, fostering a safe and healthy environment conducive to learning.
As a School Nurse, you will be the primary healthcare provider within the school setting, managing everything from minor injuries and illnesses to chronic health conditions and medical emergencies. Your day will be dynamic and rewarding, requiring a blend of clinical expertise, strong communication skills, and a genuine passion for pediatric care and public health. You’ll serve as a critical liaison between students, parents, school staff, and external healthcare providers, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated care.
Beyond direct medical care, this role emphasizes health education, prevention, and promotion. You will develop and implement health policies, conduct health screenings, educate students and staff on various health topics, and assist in identifying and addressing health-related barriers to learning. You’ll play an instrumental part in supporting students’ academic achievement by addressing their physical and mental health needs, advocating for their well-being, and contributing to a positive school climate. Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care, including first aid, medication administration, and management of acute and chronic health conditions for students and staff.
- Assess student health needs, develop individualized health plans, and implement appropriate interventions.
- Respond effectively to medical emergencies, providing immediate care and coordinating with emergency services as necessary.
- Conduct health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing, scoliosis) and make referrals for follow-up care.
- Educate students, parents, and school personnel on health topics such as nutrition, hygiene, disease prevention, and healthy lifestyle choices.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student health records in compliance with professional and legal standards (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA).
- Collaborate with school administration, teachers, parents, and community healthcare providers to promote student well-being and academic success.
- Assist in the development and implementation of school health policies, emergency preparedness plans, and infectious disease control measures.
- Identify and report suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with state laws and school district policies.
- Administer immunizations and manage vaccination records according to state requirements.
Required Skills
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Alaska (or eligibility to obtain).
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR certification.
- Minimum of two years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics, community health, or emergency care.
- Strong assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with students, parents, staff, and external partners.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines.
- Proficiency in electronic health record systems and basic computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a School Nurse or in a similar public health setting.
- Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Knowledge of relevant state and federal health regulations pertaining to schools.
- Familiarity with the Lazy Mountain/Palmer community and its healthcare resources.
- Experience with health education program development and delivery.
