Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Full-Time Building Inspector to join our dedicated team in Taunton, Massachusetts. This pivotal role involves safeguarding public welfare by ensuring that all construction and renovation projects adhere strictly to local, state, and federal building codes, zoning ordinances, and safety regulations. As a Building Inspector, you will be on the front lines, providing critical oversight and technical guidance to contractors, developers, and property owners throughout the construction lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough and timely inspections of new and existing buildings, structures, and systems (e.g., structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, energy conservation, accessibility) to ensure compliance with adopted building codes, zoning ordinances, and other relevant regulations.
  • Review construction plans, specifications, and permit applications for accuracy and code conformance prior to and during various stages of construction.
  • Issue stop-work orders, notices of violation, and corrective orders when non-compliance issues are identified, providing clear explanations and guidance for resolution.
  • Provide technical assistance and interpretation of building codes and related regulations to contractors, property owners, architects, engineers, and the general public.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all inspections, actions taken, and communications, utilizing relevant software and documentation protocols.
  • Investigate complaints regarding potential code violations and unsafe building conditions, conducting follow-up inspections as necessary.
  • Collaborate with other municipal departments, agencies, and public safety officials on interdisciplinary projects and enforcement actions.
  • Stay current with changes and updates to state and local building codes, regulations, and industry best practices through continuous professional development.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 4 years of verifiable experience in building construction, inspection, or a closely related field.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR) and other related codes and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for explaining technical information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify code violations and propose effective solutions.
  • Proficiency in using standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite) and inspection-related software.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver's License and a clean driving record, as travel throughout Taunton is required.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and make sound decisions under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Certified Building Official (CBO) or specific ICC certifications (e.g., Building Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, Electrical Inspector).
  • Experience with municipal permitting and inspection software systems.
  • Familiarity with local Taunton zoning bylaws and conservation commission regulations.
  • OSHA 10 or 30-hour certification.
