Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Cable Splicing Technician to join our dynamic team in Chegutu, Mashonaland West Province. As a Cable Splicing Technician, you will be instrumental in the installation, maintenance, and repair of our extensive telecommunications cable infrastructure, encompassing both fiber optic and copper networks. This role is critical to ensuring the seamless operation and high performance of our network, which serves thousands of customers daily. You will be responsible for precise cable splicing, termination, and testing, adhering to the highest industry standards and safety protocols. Key Responsibilities
- Perform fusion splicing and mechanical splicing of single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables, ensuring optimal signal integrity.
- Execute copper cable splicing (butt, straight, bridge tap) for various cable gauges and pair counts.
- Terminate and test fiber optic and copper cables using specialized equipment such as OTDRs, power meters, light sources, and TDRs.
- Identify and troubleshoot cable faults, breaks, and other network impairments quickly and efficiently.
- Install, maintain, and repair cable infrastructure in diverse environments, including aerial, underground, and confined spaces.
- Interpret and work from detailed engineering schematics, blueprints, and circuit diagrams.
- Complete accurate documentation of work performed, including splice diagrams, test results, and inventory usage.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, utilizing appropriate PPE at all times.
- Operate and maintain specialized splicing equipment, tools, and company vehicles responsibly.
- Collaborate with field operations teams, network engineers, and project managers to ensure project completion and network reliability.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in fiber optic cable splicing (fusion and mechanical).
- Proficiency in copper cable splicing techniques.
- Demonstrable experience with OTDRs, power meters, light sources, TDRs, and other testing equipment.
- Strong fault diagnosis and troubleshooting skills for telecommunications networks.
- Ability to work effectively at heights, in confined spaces, and in various weather conditions.
- Valid Class 3 or 4 driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
- Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant certifications (e.g., FOA CFOT, BICSI, or equivalent industry certifications).
- Experience with various cable types and manufacturers.
- Knowledge of local telecommunication standards and regulations.
- Familiarity with network mapping software and GIS tools.
- A diploma or certificate in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
