Job Description

Michamvi Sunset Bay Resort is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Carpentry Apprentice Worker to join our dynamic maintenance team. As an apprentice, you will work directly under the guidance of our experienced carpenters, gaining practical skills across a wide range of tasks – from basic repairs and maintenance of our resort’s wooden structures, furniture, and fixtures to assisting in new construction or renovation projects. This role demands a keen eye for detail, a willingness to follow instructions, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship. You’ll be involved in all aspects of carpentry, including measuring, cutting, shaping, assembling, and installing wood and other materials. You will learn to use hand and power tools safely and effectively, interpret blueprints, and understand various wood types and finishes. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior carpenters in all aspects of their daily tasks, including measuring, cutting, shaping, and assembling wood and other materials.
  • Learn to safely and proficiently use various hand tools (saws, hammers, chisels) and power tools (drills, sanders, routers).
  • Help with the installation, maintenance, and repair of wooden structures, furniture, doors, windows, and other fixtures throughout the resort.
  • Prepare work sites by gathering materials, tools, and equipment, and assist in cleaning up after projects are completed.
  • Follow safety protocols and guidelines rigorously to ensure a secure working environment for yourself and your team.
  • Support in reading and interpreting basic blueprints, drawings, and specifications as directed.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order, ensuring they are clean and stored properly.
  • Contribute to the overall upkeep and aesthetic appeal of the resort property, reporting any maintenance issues observed.
  • Demonstrate a strong eagerness to learn, ask questions, and apply new skills and knowledge efficiently.

Required Skills

  • Strong manual dexterity and physical stamina to perform demanding tasks.
  • Basic understanding of measurements and mathematical concepts.
  • Excellent work ethic and a strong desire to learn and develop carpentry skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively within a team.
  • Punctual, reliable, and committed to working full-time hours.
  • Good communication skills in English or Swahili.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials and stand for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in any manual labor or trade-related work, even if informal.
  • Completion of secondary education or vocational training in a relevant field.
  • Residency in or near Pingwe, Michamvi, Zanzibar.
  • Basic knowledge of different types of wood and construction materials.
  • A foundational understanding of workplace safety practices.
